How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Fash Flood starts with one question: will this iron or steamer do the job for the person shopping for it? A shirt a week and a closet full of suits call for different tools.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with what you press

Dress shirts, linen, curtains, quilting fabric and a wedding dress each need something different.

A steamer that's perfect for hanging jackets can be awkward on a collar. A heavy iron that suits a sewing table can tire your arm on a big pile.

We say who a model fits and who should look elsewhere.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at wattage, heat-up time, water tank size, steam output, soleplate material, cord length, weight and auto shut-off. For steamers we also check hose length, hanger and attachments.

Rowenta, Conair, CHI, Panasonic and the other makers describe their products in their own words. We name the brand for each claim and note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after weeks of use. We look for patterns, such as irons that drip, tanks that are hard to fill, steam that fades and cords that tangle.

One bad review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. An iron that's great for a sewing room may score lower in a guide for daily shirts.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We check for recalls and keep pages current

Some cheap steamers have been recalled for burn hazards, so we check each model against the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall list before we link it. We also skip unknown brands with no track record.

Models change and some disappear from stores, so we only link new units. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.

Irons and steamers get very hot. Always follow the maker's manual, keep hot steam away from people and pets, and unplug the appliance when you're done.
